Unlike many more conventional and modern methods of medicine and healthcare that many of us turn to in times of need, chiropractic care is a completely natural form of treatment. It does not rely on the need for medication or invasive procedures, both of which can come with risky side effects or other unwanted and troubling consequences. In order to understand why and how chiropractic can be so beneficial to a person’s overall health and wellness, it is important to understand the science which chiropractors work under. Essentially, the field of chiropractic medicine revolves around the idea and understanding that the body has the ability to take care of and heal itself, as long as it is given the chance to do so. Chiropractors would rather see their patients dealing with the root of their health issues, as opposed to merely masking their problems with more conventional and modern treatment methods. Chiropractors use many adjusting techniques in order to realign the spine. This provides them with the ability to help facilitate a healthier body — one with the ability to truly take care of itself. This is because the spinal column houses and protects the central nervous system, which is the part of the body which is responsible for facilitating communication between the body and the brain. A misalignment in the spine can disrupt this communication and interfere with the proper functioning of many aspects of the body, such as the metabolism, sleep patterns, and blood pressure.
Dr. Josh believes that there is an innate, inborn intelligence inside all of us which is designed to heal itself. The nervous system (brain, spinal cord, and every nerve that exits the spine) is the master system of the body. Nothing in your body happens unless a nerve tells it to happen: movement, heart beating, breathing, digestion, sensation, etc. If the spine isn’t functioning perfectly in every segment, one of those nerves trying to communicate to a part of the body has their signal diminished. This is termed “subluxation.” This is similar to a water hose in which water is freely flowing. When you put a bend in the hose, you just get water trickling out. The purpose of chiropractic is to take the pressure off of that hose and let the water flow freely. By adjusting the spine, we are allowing the brain to communicate freely to every organ, cell, and tissue in the body thus allowing the body to heal itself naturally.
